Mellow's was started in 1981. We began as fine arts students in Florence and Rome, Italy back in 1978 and 1981.
In
returning to America, we brought gifts of handmade jewelry to friends
and family. People would stop us on the street asking where we got the
artistic jewelry. Many people asked if we would get some of these
pieces for them and our business was born. Our fine arts background
was a natural fit with the exciting designs we found in Italian and
other European jewelry trends.
In
traveling back and forth to Europe we worked with jewelry artists,
craftsmen and designers. The 1980's were the time of the fashion
jewelry boom with fun, bold and artistic pieces. We began working with
Italian designers of fashion and bridge jewelry (sterling silver with
semi-precious stones) as well as designing our own pieces.
They
were imported and sold in stores here in America. French and English
pieces were then added to our Italian designs traveling to Paris,
London, Venice, Florence and Rome.
In
1991 our retail store was opened in downtown Honolulu. Our specialty
has always been one of a kind unique items in antiques and estate
jewelry. Custom design evolved naturally. Hawaiian jewelry
particularly lends itself to custom creations.
We
studied with the Gemological Institute of America, GIA, and have much
hands-on experience over these years. Designing and creating pieces in
both costume and fine jewelry has continued to evolve as the Mellow's
business has grown.
During
our 26 years in business we have studied the history and skilled
craftsmanship typical of the many periods of jewelry. Those times are
in sharp contrast to the current mass production that make it
difficult to find unique quality pieces today.
Our
specialty is design in custom made jewelry. We love to work one on
one with clients and together create individual pieces for them. Some
are made for special occasions, others for fun and creative
experiences. Over the years we have entered competitions. Awards
were won for Nostalgic Jewelry Design, Phenomenal Jewelry Design, Body
Art Jewelry Design, and Hawaiian Jewelry Design through the Hawaii
Jewelers Association.
During our years in business the mix of the antiques with the computer age of today has been a happy marriage.
